I have shown Karen’s work on here from her end of year show for the Foundation Degree – this is a film of her piece for this year –
“I am a textile student and this is my latest project.
Environmental issues threaten certain coral and sealife. This work represents the textures, colours and contours of the underwater world, creating ‘preserved textiles’.
The embroidered 3D cape reflects the growth and cultivation of the natural world, using traditional textile techniques and vintage aesthetics injected with contemporary technology producing an innovative futuristic piece that ultimately creates an art and fashion crossover. The glow in the dark embroidery media used represents the electric fish in the abyss.
Imagery has played a key part in the project, not only to promote my work for editorials/costume however to enable the textiles to be brought to life.

Students from The FdA Textiles course and FdA Photography collaborated on breaking down surfaces using different processes and recording the pieces using digital and wet darkroom techniques. More Images here:
